A video shows a crater of natural gas which has been burning for a mindboggling 38 years! It was set alight on purpose because the gas is toxic, but the vast amount of gas still escaping from the ground has kept it ablaze
This giant fiery crater is in the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan and the locals call it "the mouth of hell". In 1971, geologists drilling near the village of Derweze discovered a massive underground cave filled with natural gas. The ground under their drilling rig collapsed, leaving a crater 100 metres wide. Because of the risk from toxic gasses, it was decided to burn the gas.
The fire in the Derweze crater has been burning ever since! Sometimes fires can burn for decades underground - the coal beneath Centralia, USA, has been burning for almost 50 years!
