October 31st marked  1,000 days until the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and to celebrate Science: So What? So Everything caught up with record-breaking British swimmer Liam Tancock.

What first got you interested in swimming?

Watching my brother learn to swim when I was four, then finally I got my chance when I was five and I loved it!

You seem to have had a lot of success at backstroke - is it your favourite stroke?

Yes definitely, I have always enjoyed backstroke, but I do train on all strokes.

What is a typical training session like?

Every session is different, depending on what we will be working on but they are usually two and a half hours long.

How important is what you eat and drink to your performance, and what do you particularly recommend?

It is very important, but it is good to have a varied diet (http://www.bda.uk.com/). Carbohydrates and protein are my favourite. I love spaghetti Bolognese and a good steak! Also keeping hydrated is very important.

What are you studying at Loughborough, and how do you fit it around your training?

I'm doing a BSc (Hons) Applied Sports Science degree.  Due to my training commitments, I have been able to split my degree into separate modules. So I can do these at any time, wherever I am in the world.

Do you do any cross-training?

Yes, we do a lot in our early season training.  Everything from running, cycling, weights, circuits, medicine balls, Pilates, gymnastics, and rock climbing

Have you ever had any injuries, and if so, how did you overcome them?

I broke my wrist in 2006. I was lucky I had a great support network behind me and the best bone specialists in the country, who made me a bespoke cast so that I could carry on training. I was only off training for one day!

Do you use any technology to help you hone your technique?

I use a Speedo kick board and Pull buoy along with fins in training. This helps me work on specific technique. My Speedo Speedsocket goggles ensure I have a clear vision, they have anti-fog lenses.

How important is your coach in ensuring that you achieve your best?

He always helps me strive for perfection and gives me great feedback both in training and competition. He also writes great sessions for me.

Do you ever use sports psychology?

We have the use of a sports psychologists as and when we need it.

Are you hoping to compete at London 2012?

Definitely, a home Olympics is amazing and something I have dreamed about since I was little. Bring on London 2012!

What do you do to relax?

I chill out with friends, go out for some food or visit the health spa.
